From the time-honored city of Stralsund, ferries depart for Rügen and Hiddensee. Likewise, two bridges connect the Hanseatic city with the Baltic island of Rügen. Already in the 13th century, seafarers appreciated the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. At that time they came with building materials and furs to exchange them for tobacco, cloth and salts. 500 years ago Stralsund was one of the richest cities in the Baltic region. Today tourists admire the pretty gabled houses, the old brick warehouses and the Gothic churches. Even if you have little time, it is worth exploring the old town with its Stralsund sights.
The old town of Stralsund has the shape of a triangle and is surrounded by water. On the land side, the Knieper and Frankenteich ponds extend along the city walls. The harbor in the east is separated from the old town by the ferry canal and the Baltic Sea finally separates Stralsund from Rügen.

The historic old town of Stralsund was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002, together with the Hanseatic city of Wismar. The sights presented here are all located in the old town and are not far from each other.
